Memorex HBS II - 1990 - US
Like many manufacturers, Memorex outsourced their production from the 80s onward. In this case, these were outsourced to SKC, and these are excellent cassettes.
These US-Market cassettes are underrated cassettes which to our ears aren't too far off the same generation SA. Year of production: 1989-90
Note 1: 90 Minutes: Made in the USA. The picture shows they were made in South Korea. New updated picture will be added soon. These originally came as a 5-Pack held together with two strips of tape (Top and Bottom). This left a real mess and some of the wrappers were open split prior to getting to my hands. All cleaned up, glue residue removed, splits were repaired with clean and clear tape to avoid the wrapper from getting damaged further. They are now very clean, presentable and even collectible, if that's what you do.
Note 1A: 90 Minutes: Made in South Korea. SOLD. Out of Stock.
Note 2: 100 Minutes: Made in the USA. The wrappers are lightly to moderately scuffed.
Note 3: 110 Minutes: Made in the USA: One hairline crack in the front of the case. B-Grade. SOLD.
Note 4: 100 Minutes: B-Grade: Only 1 available. One large hairline crack right on the front side of the case. Looks like you can still use the case, but the discount will allow you to cover the expense of buying a new case.
Note 5: 90 Minutes: Made in the USA. B-Grade. Only 1 available. See the very last picture (actual pic).
About Memorex:
Established in 1961 in Silicon Valley, Memorex started by selling computer tapes, then added other media such as disk packs. The company then expanded into disk drives and other peripheral equipment for IBM mainframes. During the 1970s and into the early 1980s Memorex was worldwide one of the largest independent suppliers of disk drives and communications controllers to users of IBM-compatible mainframes, as well as media for computer uses and consumers.
Memorex entered the consumer media business in 1971 and started the ad campaign, first with its "shattering glass" advertisements and then with a series of famous television commercials featuring Ella Fitzgerald. In the commercials she would sing a note that shattered a glass while being recorded to a Memorex audio cassette. The tape was played back and the recording also broke the glass, asking "Is it live, or is it Memorex?" This would become the company slogan which was used in a series of advertisements released through 1970s and 1980s.
In 1982 Memorex was bought by Burroughs. Over the next six years, Burroughs and its successor Unisys shut down, sold off or spun out the various parts of Memorex.
Over time the Memorex consumer brand has been owned by Tandy, Handy Holdings, Imation and as of 2016 Digital Products International (DPI)[5]. Today, Memorex is a brand for consumer electronics and accessories such as portable audio players, iPod accessories, flat panel TVs, Blu-ray Disc players, flash drives, CDs and DVDs.
